While purple lipsticks and silver grey hair might be the beauty statements of the moment, there have always been beauty fashions throughout history. Even as far back as 8700 BC, women would adopt beauty customs in order to fit the ideals of appearing attractive, and different countries and cultures have their own ideas of what those customs should be.

Our new infographic explores these strange beauty trends from all over the world, dating back to Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome, and including bizarre beauty fashions that are currently on trend.

For example, did you know that in Japan, women used to drink an iron-based dye which would stain their teeth black? Or that in 18th Century France, Marie Antoinette made it popular to be so pale that women would accentuate their veins, drawing over them with blue pencil?
